🌍 Small actions that change lives: The impact of the Childhood Foundation in Guinea-Bissau
A gesture of solidarity that transforms communities
Consulmar Travel would like to share with our community a project that has touched us deeply: the recent delivery of humanitarian aid to the community of Sambasilate, in Guinea-Bissau, by our friends and sponsors of the Fundación Infancia.
This solidarity effort has reached an area where the lack of basic resources such as medicines, school supplies or children’s clothing is still a daily reality. The following lines not only narrate what was delivered, but the true meaning of each of these gestures.
🩺 Uninsured health care
Life-saving medicines in Sambasilate
In and around Sambasilate, rural communities rely on a single pharmacy run by the Sisters to supply medical dispensaries. There, shortages of antibiotics, painkillers, burn creams or specific medications are the norm.
Thanks to the aid provided, this pharmacy has been supplied with essential medicines. So urgent was the support that, at the time of arrival, some medicines were not even placed on the shelves: they were used immediately. This is the case of Idrissa, a child with a dental infection, or Filomena, a girl who works at a relative’s house and who had a severe burn on her wrist. Both were able to receive treatment thanks to the donation.
📚 Educating in contexts without resources
School materials that spark creativity
In Sambasilate’s school, the children had hardly any learning materials. Many had never seen plasticine or watercolors, let alone used them. During the visit, school materials were handed out and workshops were held in which the children learned, experimented and laughed: from the first shy strokes on paper to the final colorful drawings, the experience was as educational as it was emotional.
⚽ Playing is also a right
A ball that brought joy back to an entire school
Until this mission, the entire school shared a single ball, which broke in the middle of the school year. With the new balls, marked by class, the handover was a real celebration. A collective match was organized and attended by all the children. There were no teams or goalkeepers: just children running after a ball with an energy and joy impossible to describe.
🧵 Training with impact
Sewing machines to learn, create and progress
In contexts where there is no electricity or access to professional training, learning a trade can change a life. Thanks to donations, mechanical sewing machines were installed in Sambasilate and electric sewing machines in Cumura, and fabric and thread were provided for the workshops. These spaces will enable young people and adults to develop skills with which to earn a living.
💻 Technology at the service of education
Digital tools that open up new possibilities
Laptops, a projector and batteries were donated to the school. The material was tested with the Sisters and one of the educational films was shown in Portuguese, the official language of the country. This tool not only entertains, but also facilitates learning in an environment with few digital resources.
👕 Dress with dignity and play with enthusiasm
Clothes and toys to bring back childhood
Children’s clothes were delivered to many families in vulnerable situations. In the words of the team: “many children will no longer have to wear torn and leaky clothes”. Toys, a very scarce commodity in the area, were also distributed. Some children, like a little girl who carried a doll made from a syrup bottle, had never had a real toy before.
