The Bijagós Archipelago is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

An international recognition that promotes conservation and sustainable tourism in Guinea-Bissau

📅 July 13, 2025 — At the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held this July, historic news was confirmed for Guinea-Bissau: the Bijagós Archipelago has been officially inscribed on the World Heritage List.

This recognition is the result of more than a decade of work, scientific research, international cooperation, and, above all, the active involvement of the local communities that inhabit these islands.

🛤 A long road to international recognition

The first attempt at a bid dates back to 2012. At that time, the proposal was rejected due to a lack of scientific justification and limited participation from local populations. However, this setback marked the beginning of a committed and transformative process.

In recent years, ecological, anthropological, and cultural studies have documented the archipelago’s exceptional value. Communities have also been given a voice, ensuring that their traditional practices and role in conservation are taken into account.

🌿 A unique and fragile ecosystem

The Bijagós Archipelago, located off the west coast of Africa, is made up of more than 80 islands, only about 20 of which are permanently inhabited. It is a territory of exceptional biodiversity: mangroves, wetlands, pristine beaches, endangered species such as the African manatee and the green turtle, and a vibrant culture deeply connected to nature.

Back in 1996, Bijagós was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its balance between conservation and traditional ways of life. Now, its inclusion as a World Heritage Site strengthens that protection and opens new avenues for responsible tourism development in the region.
