At that time, the proposal was rejected due to a lack of scientific justification and limited participation from local populations. However, this setback marked the beginning of a committed and transformative process.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1617\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In recent years, ecological, anthropological, and cultural studies have documented the archipelago&#8217;s exceptional value. Communities have also been given a voice, ensuring that their traditional practices and role in conservation are taken into account. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1656\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\ud83c\udf3f A unique and fragile ecosystem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"2060\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Bijag\u00f3s Archipelago, located off the west coast of Africa, is made up of more than 80 islands, only about 20 of which are permanently inhabited. It is a territory of exceptional biodiversity: mangroves, wetlands, pristine beaches, endangered species such as the African manatee and the green turtle, and a vibrant culture deeply connected to nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2358\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back in 1996, Bijag\u00f3s was declared a <strong data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2135\">UNESCO Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>, recognizing its balance between conservation and traditional ways of life.
